George Founds’ passion for wildlife is an enduring
life-long journey, driving him throughout his
multi-faceted career as an accredited illustrator,
artist, writer and college Professor. His talents have
been commissioned and published by such revered
organizations as National Geographic, Reader’s Digest,
National Wildlife Society, National Park Service and the
United States Department of the Interior.
Founds hails from the industrial and cultural mecca of
Baltimore, Maryland, where he grew up in the inner-city.
But his father’s passion for the outdoors introduced him
to adventures beyond the city, and at an early age
hunting and fishing became his favorite pastimes. His
fascination with wildlife soon transferred to Founds’
other budding talent…art. His uncanny natural ability to
study nature and transfer it to canvas opened the doors
to his career of choice and still inspires him today.
Founds has traveled the world to photograph and capture
the essence of our planet’s diverse ecosystems, and
painstakingly recreates every detail of those images in
his art, bringing every feather, scale or hair follicle
to vibrant life. Look closely at his work, and you will
be truly mesmerized by the detail.
Holding a Masters of Fine Arts degree from The
University of Michigan, a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the
Maryland Institute College of Art, as well as
numerous
other credentials, Founds’ formal education in the arts
is impressive. Besides his extensive resume as a
professional artist, he has taught graphic design and
illustration at numerous acclaimed schools and
universities. But aside from these accomplishments, it
is the passion in his heart and skilled hands which
ultimately touches the soul of anyone who enjoys the
beauty of wildlife. Now retired from teaching, Founds
continues to create amazing works of art in his home
studio outside Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
